I hope to get back to blogging soon... Till then, here is a picture of Hunter playing in the snow.

Winter in the City
Jim and I went to South Haven's annual Ice Breaker Festival. It was a great festival. Seventeen businesses in downtown South Haven open their doors to the chili tasters. We even tasted chili ice cream.
We enjoyed tasting it all and checking out some businesses we'd never been to, enjoying their outdoor fire areas and meeting people.
We enjoyed checking out the ice carvings too.
We've really been enjoying hiking to the Lake this winter.
This particular hike was really difficult as we had over a foot of fresh snow. However, it was totally worth it when we reached the top of the dune and had this great view to take in.

A New Family Activity
As anyone who has met me knows... I am obsessed with our puppy Hunter. So, when Jim proposed a winter activity we could all do together, I was game.

Enter SKIJOR. It's very simple; strap on some cross country skis, strap the dog to your waist and get mushing!

Today was our first go at it, next time will be my turn to get pulled by the pup! Based on Hunter's current exhaustion, I see a lot of skijoring in our future. :)

Halloween
Adrienne came to visit for Halloween.

We had great intentions of dressing up as Spartan Football players to go with Hunter as a football. Then, it was cold. So we abandoned that plan and made poor Hunter dress as a football all by himself. Luckily, we ran met up with Bodie who was dressed as a Little Devil.

Sadly, neither Hunter nor Bodie felt confident enough in their outfits to compete in the costume contest.

Hunter did run in to another dog who chose the same outfit as him though...

Paws on the Pier
Ever since we got Hunter from Al-Van Humane Society here in South Haven I've tried to keep up with the upcoming events raising money for the shelter. So, I knew MONTHS ago about the greatness that Paws on the Pier was sure to be.

It did not disappoint. There was a great turn out, and we all got to enjoy a sunny day of walking our dogs down the pier, visiting some great dog-centric booths, and raising money for Al-Van.

Well, it was mostly amazing... except that it was way too hot for poor Huntie and he stopped and laid down about every 20 feet. So, I bought him some "Frosty Paws" to cool off. Hunter did not care for, and to be honest, I had a taste and didn't like it either.

After Paws on the Pier Hunter could not make it all the way back to our house, so we stopped at Joe's Bar to have some lunch with his buddy Bodie.

HarborFest 2010
Last week was HarborFest, one of several big festivals in South Haven during the summer.
Saturday was the first day in a long time I can remember where Jim and I had nothing going on and got to spend the whole day together.
Hunter loved it too. We started out by taking a nice walk on the Kal-Haven Trail with Hunter. Then, Jim and I went down to the Pier and got some carnival food and checked out the festival.

We stopped by an antique boat show, got some Dairy Queen and headed home. Then, we did something we NEVER do. We laid around in the backyard for a couple hours. Once the heat became too much we took Hunter to the beach to cool off.

On the way home we stopped by an old-fashioned baseball game and cheered on the South Haven Park Peelers vs some other team. It was very interesting, they play by 1800's rules, and use no gloves.

At that point, we'd already done a lot, but the day kept going, we had some China Cafe Restaurant for dinner, then headed back down to HarborFest to get an elephant ear, watch the sunset and check out the bands playing that night.

Confessions of a Home Alone Sarah
This weekend Jim off working on The Friends of Goodwill . A lot.
Hunter and I did just fine on our own. We did lots of walking, lots of playing lots of cuddling, and lots of staring out the window.
We also managed to make some treats for Jim. You wouldn't know it though... all that remains of 2 dozen chocolate chip cookies is one.
In between all the fun I may or may not have made Hunter engage in a photo shoot with me. He is difficult to pin down sometimes.

Puppy Play Date
Last week Hunter and I went to Cassie's house for a puppy play date with Cassie's new puppy Bodie and Jesse's dog Lilly.

Lilly is the white one and Bodie is the small black one mostly hidden under Hunter.

While watching them play I could not believe Hunter used to be as little as Bodie! Hunter now weighs in at 75 pounds, but when got him he was a little over ten, and lost weight during his pneumonia.
It was good to see how Hunter adjusted his play style to a younger, much smaller dog. He and Lilly played much differently...

The play date was a success and left us with a peaced out pup:

Puppy Parenthood
Last week in preparation for the near three hour car trip to Northville I took Hunter to doggy day care for the day on Friday.
In past visits to doggy day care Hunter has had a great time, but, been a challenge for the staff. It seems his puppy enthusiasm and energy can exhaust every dog to the point where Hunter has to be put in the "quite room" for the last couple hours.
Still, it came as a small shock to me when the owner himself wanted to talk to me after Hunter's visit. He crouched down, holding Hunter between his legs.
"Mom," he said, "We had a little incident today."
Immediately I blamed Hunter, "Uh-oh did he get too crazy again today?" I asked.
"Well, it seems Hunter was a bit much for another dog today.... And we drew a little blood."
He then pulled back Hunter's ear to show me where a dog unimpressed with Hunter's puppy antics had bit all the way through Hunter's ear.
Poor Huntie.

Spoiled.
Jim and I have made it a goal this year to make things from scratch rather than purchase store made items or premixed packets. Already we have discovered Hollandaise sauce is even better homemade- even if it is curdled, mashed potatoes are easy to make (neither of us could believe we ever used potato flakes), and that butter makes everything better.
High on recent successes I channeled my inner Martha and decided to make Huntie some homemade "Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers." They were incredibly easy to make and Hunter enjoyed being allowed to lick the spoon for once.

Hunter seemed impressed with my skills:

(Full disclosure, we are working very hard to keep him off the counters... I may have let him stay up just a moment so I could snap this shot- he was then scolded. And, for the record, he is getting much better at staying down.)
The finished goods:

Hunter is spoiled.
Not to be outdone by my baking, Jim prepared fresh caught walleye, opting to use no recipe and create his own masterpiece.... I might just be spoiled too.
